The Certification Landscape and Working as an Independent Contractor

This short workshop is intended for bilingual professionals who are

  • Interested in learning more about interpreting as a career
  • New to interpretation and ready to learn about the business side of freelance interpretation

John Bichsel will give a 40-minute presentation on the Landscape of Certification. This presentation provides an overview of what types of interpretation certification exist, including state and federal court certifications, medical certifications and professional organization certifications. A 20-minute Q & A session will follow.

Irene Radillo D. will give a 40-minute presentation on Working as an Independent Contractor. This presentation includes concrete examples of how to manage the financial aspects of freelancing, the importance of advertising, how to build a client base, conference work and professionalism.  A 20-minute Q & A session will follow.

Finally, presenters will discuss options to get started with training. Some of the training options we’ll discuss are self-study products offered by NCI and in-person NCI workshops, and degree programs at Pima Community College and the University of Arizona.
