Navajo Interpreter Certification

Please note: you must register for the exam IN ADVANCE, and you may only register for the oral portion of the exam if you have successfully passed the written portion already. You will NOT be allowed to register at the exam locations. Only registered participants will be allowed to take the examination.

The National Center for Interpretation, in partnership with the state of New Mexico, is pleased to offer what is currently the only interpreter certification for Navajo<>English interpreters. As part of a grant-funded program, the certification process is completely free to Navajo-English bilingual individuals.

The exam is administered in two phases: written and oral.

After passing the written, candidates can then register to take the oral portion: this tests your interpreting proficiency in both English and Navajo.

The oral portion of the exam is next being offered:
April 14th - 21st, 2012

  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Flagstaff, AZ
  • Gallup, NM

Again, there is no fee to take this exam.

What We Test You On

The oral portion of the exam will be a one-on-one exam designed to test your proficiency with interpreting between Navajo and English.

The oral portion of the exam takes approximately one hour to complete.

How To Study

The National Center for Interpretation will be sending out the "Navajo Talking Manual" to all candidates eligible to take the oral portion of the Navajo Interpreter Certification Exam.
