The Essentials: Medical Edition

The University of Arizona’s National Center for Interpretation is proud to bring you the first in a series of consecutive, sight, and simultaneous exercises designed to help aspiring medical interpreters enhance their interpreting skills. These exercises cover a wide range of medical conditions, carefully chosen to illustrate the range of topics an English-Spanish and Spanish-English interpreter is likely to encounter. While the exercises are not exhaustive, the topics covered represent many of the pertinent medical issues confronting the Latino community. Each exercise is also based on authentic medical documents and transcripts.

The first volume of The ESSENTIALS: Medical Edition includes:

  • Digital audio recordings of all consecutive and simultaneous exercises on CD
  • Complete scripts for all consecutive and simultaneous exercises
  • Printed documents for all sight translation exercises
  • Exercise-specific glossaries for each exercise
Together, these materials make a useful and complete practice package for self-study in the consecutive, sight, and simultaneous modes of medical interpretation. The only equipment necessary to use this edition of The ESSENTIALS is a CD player with headphones and an additional recording unit. With these, you have everything you need to simulate a language laboratory-type learning experience in a home environment.
