The Essentials: Medical Edition

Simultaneous Exercises

Also included in this volume are six simultaneous exercises. While the simultaneous mode is rarely used in the traditional medical setting - i.e., doctor-patient dialogues - it is widely used for the interpretation of medical conferences and seminars. For this reason, three of the six simultaneous exercises are continuous speech acts, very similar to what you might encounter in a conference setting. In order to help you gain more practice in this mode, three dialogues designed for simultaneous interpretation have also been included. The exercises are divided into two difficulty levels: Beginning/Intermediate and Advanced. A variety of health topics are represented in the exercises:

Beginning/Intermediate:

Exercise 1: A Healthy Diet
Exercise 2: AIDS Information
Exercise 3: Diabetes Information

Advanced:
Exercise 4: Srta. Abella’s Breast Cancer
Exercise 5: Gina’s Alcoholism
Exercise 6: Sr. Montes’ Post-stroke Consultation

Use the Simultaneous Source Disk when practicing the simultaneous mode. In the Beginning/Intermediate Exercises (1-3), the speaker reads the script at a moderate speed. In the Advanced Exercises (4-6), an English speaking doctor, along with other health/social personnel, will interview a Spanish-speaking patient.
