Michael M. Brescia is Curator of Ethnohistory in the Arizona State Museum and holds several faculty affiliations across campus. As a historian who specializes in Mexico, he integrates translation and paleography in both his teaching and research. Michael views translation as an intellectual and cultural exercise that promotes an intimacy between the translator and the source material and, ultimately, enriches learning for monolingual audiences by providing access to content that would have remained unknown. Michael’s published translations (from Spanish to English) include, for example, the renowned Mexican historian Antonio Rubial Garcia's book on seventeenth-century Mexico City and another noted Mexican scholar, Josefina Vazquez Zoraida's chapter on the U.S.-Mexico War in the Oxford History of Mexico, as well as English translations of primary sources (Latin American Perspectives journal) and roundtable discussions in Spanish (The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America). Moreover, he has provided English-to-Spanish translations for multiple constituencies, including the Japanese American National Museum, in Los Angeles, California, WCA Hospital, in Jamestown, New York, and the Arizona State Museum, here at the UA.
