Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Our webinars are approved for CEUs as “live and instructor-led” trainings. As such, we track attendance and can only issue certificates to those who attend live. Although everyone who registers for a webinar receives 30-day access to a recording of the event, we cannot issue certificates based on watching that recording.
We try to issue certificates as quickly as possible and usually send them out the week following each webinar. However, it can up to two weeks for all certificates to be issued. Please be patient! If you don’t see your email, be sure to check your spam/junk folder in case it was misrouted.
We are a “pre-approved provider” of CEUs for the Florida Courts. This means that all of our webinars that are relevant to the work of a court interpreter automatically provide CEU credit for Florida interpreters. You need only submit a copy of your certificate of attendance to get your CEUs.
NCI is a pre-approved provider of CEUs for several state courts. This means that all trainings NCI provides that are relevant to the work of court interpreters automatically provide CEUs in those states. You need only submit copies of your certificates to the relevant court to receive your CEUs. NCI is recognized as a pre-approved provider by these states:
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Florida
- Kentucky
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
If your state has a list of pre-approved providers and we are not included, please let us know: ncitrp@arizona.edu!
Most certifying bodies provide one CEU for each hour of training, but not all. Florida, for example, provides one CEU for each 50 minutes of training. Our typical webinar is three hours, which provides three CEUs for most certifying bodies, but 3.6 in Florida. Different certifying bodies calculate CEUs differently, so check with yours to be sure.
If NCI has not applied to your state or organization, you may still be able to receive CEUs for our trainings. Most states/organizations have a process for individual interpreters to apply directly for CEUs for trainings they’ve taken. That process typically requires, at a minimum, proof of attendance, such as our certificate of completion. Check with your state/organizations to be sure you understand its rules. If you need anything additional, please let us know: ncitrp@arizona.edu!
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) go by a variety of names depending on the state or organization that approves them. They are called CIMCE units in California and CIE credits in other states, for example. Regardless of their name, CEUs provide evidence that certified interpreters are fulfilling their professional obligation to maintain their interpreting proficiency through ongoing training. For many states and professional organizations, they are required to maintain certification. There are three ways to receive CEUs:
1. CEU Applications by NCI
NCI applies for approval for specific trainings. We apply for CEUs for relevant webinars with the following professional organizations and state courts:
- American Translators Association
- California
- Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters
- Oregon
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf *
- Texas
2. Pre-approved CEU Providers
NCI is recognized as a pre-approved provider of CEUs by the following states:
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Florida
- Kentucky
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
As a “pre-approved provider,” all NCI’s trainings that are relevant to a given certification are assumed to be approved. It is important to note that the topic of a given training must be relevant to the work of the interpreter. If your state has a list of pre-approved providers and we are not included, please let us know: ncitrp@arizona.edu!
3. CEU Applications by Individual Interpreters
