Best Practices for Collaboration between SLPs and Interpreters

This webinar will provide an overview of the respective duties of speech and language pathologists and school interpreters and describe best practices on how they can collaborate effectively when the SLPs are unable to communicate with their clients directly due to a language barrier. We will discuss the various role and ethical boundaries that govern the interpreter under these circumstances, with an eye towards maximizing the effectiveness of the provider/client encounter. We will also discuss some of the linguistic, conceptual, and cultural issues that may complicate such encounters.

This 3-hour language neutral webinar is taught entirely in English and is open to interpreters in all languages.  This webinar is live and instructor-led. Participants are required to actively participant in the workshop.

 

Instructor:  Dr. Holly Silvestri is the Senior Coordinator for Curriculum, Training, and Translation at the National Center for Interpretation. She has a PhD in linguistics from Middlebury College. She has years of experience both as a K12 teacher and as an interpreter in educational settings in a variety of states and countries and has been a certified teacher in NY, AZ, MA, and CT. She is a founding member of the American Association of Interpreting and Translation in Education (AAITE). Her working languages are Spanish and French.
